PAIN RELIVING INJECTIONS IN ORTHOPEDICS

I'm Dr. A. Mohan Krishna, Senior Consultant Orthopedic Surgeon at Apollo Hospitals, Jubilee Hills, Hyderabad, Telangana. Today, I would like to delve deeper into the use of pain-relieving injections in orthopedics, a topic that many of my patients often inquire about.

Pain-relieving injections are a common method used to manage and alleviate pain in orthopedic patients, particularly when pain is severe or when other treatments are ineffective. These injections are typically administered directly into the affected joint, muscle, or area causing pain. There are two main types of injections that we use in orthopedics: corticosteroids and hyaluronic acid.

*Corticosteroid Injections:*

Corticosteroids are powerful anti-inflammatory medications. When injected directly into an affected joint or area, they can significantly reduce inflammation and thus alleviate pain. Conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, gout, bursitis, and tendinitis can often benefit from corticosteroid injections.

The effects of corticosteroid injections can last for several weeks or even months. However, it's important to note that the number of these injections a patient can receive is limited because prolonged use can lead to potential side effects, including weakening of tissues and potential joint damage. Therefore, these injections are typically used as a part of a comprehensive pain management plan that includes other treatments such as physical therapy and lifestyle modifications.

*Hyaluronic Acid Injections:*

Hyaluronic acid injections, also known as viscosupplementation, are primarily used for osteoarthritis, particularly in the knee. Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance in our joints that helps to lubricate them and absorb shock. In people with osteoarthritis, the composition and quality of this substance can degrade, leading to increased friction and pain in the joint.

Hyaluronic acid injections aim to supplement the natural hyaluronic acid in the joint, improving lubrication, reducing pain, and improving joint function. These injections are typically administered once a week for three to five weeks. The pain relief from hyaluronic acid injections can last several months and in some cases, up to a year.

Both types of injections are usually well-tolerated with minimal side effects. However, some patients may experience temporary pain, swelling, or redness at the injection site.

It's crucial to remember that while these injections can provide significant pain relief, they are not a cure for underlying orthopedic conditions. They should be used as part of a comprehensive treatment plan that may include physical therapy, medication, exercise, and lifestyle modifications.

If you're struggling with orthopedic pain and wonder whether these injections might be a good option for you, I encourage you to reach out to us at Apollo Hospitals. We're here to help you navigate your treatment options and find a solution that works best for you.
